Gamete and embryo research

Greece has adopted one of the most friendly-to-novelty legislation on assisted reproduction in Europe (l. 3089/2002. l. 3305/2005). This includes the possibility to use spare reproductive material (gametes and embryos in vitro) for research purposes, after specific consent of gamete donors. A national Authority on Medically Assisted Reproduction ensures compliance of fertility clinics and gamete/embryos banks with legal requirements, by licensing, also, research projects involving reproductive material. The law accepts only research pertaining to explicitly mentioned specific objects, separately for reproductive or for non reproductive purposes. Clinics should also take appropriate measures for the protection of sensitive data derived from gametes and embryos. Data should be kept in specific registries, and they are subject of processing under the responsibility of the clinic’s owner (as data controller).
